Kuranda Scenic Railway
The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of dense rainforest, steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls within the world heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park.
Rising from sea level to 328m, this famous railway takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to wind its way through 15 hand carved tunnels, across the giant bridge over Stoney Creek Falls and past the spectacular Barron Falls then onto Kuranda, the village in the rainforest.
Constructed between 1882 and 1891 it is considered an engineering feat of tremendous
magnitude. Hundreds of men were employed to build the 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges that stand as a monument to the pioneers of Tropical North Queensland who lost their lives working on the railway.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway can be joined at Cairns or Freshwater Railway Stations for morning departures and from Kuranda Station for afternoon departures. Choose from several day tour packages combining your Kuranda Scenic Railway journey with a variety of attractions.
The journey includes an English commentary and all passengers receive a souvenir Z-card portraying the history of the railways construction and a map of Kuranda and the journey. Kuranda Scenic Railway passengers can choose from a range of special services such as ‘Royale’, which includes a personal hostess to provide live commentary en route. KSR Gold Class service offers passengers wanting that extra comfort and a little bit of luxury of individual seating, a dedicated Gold Class Attendant, refreshments en route and an exclusive KSR Gold Class gift pack.
