Reef Magic Education Cruises
Tim North the founder and director of Reef Magic Cruises has over 30 years’ experience in charters to the Great Barrier Reef and islands. Locally owned and operated, Reef Magic now want to extend an invitation to all schools to take part in Marine Biology presentations and projects that will connect students to the Great Barrier Reef.
With our expertise and resources, we are now offering specialised education and research field trips. We can tailor an unforgettable experience that will align with the Australian curriculum and allow students to participate in on going field research projects that include:
- Eye on the Reef
- Weekly and Rapid monitoring programs that have been designed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).
The monitoring programs are used as an essential tool to assess coral reef health; and allows engagement to a wider audience in creating a sense of stewardship for all local communities. The monitoring programs provide a direct educational resource and the activities will allow students to recognise the fragile nature of our reef. The results of the monitoring program will provide real data that will be added to the GBRMPA science based management system.
Reef Magic Education Research Programs
- Water quality
- Coral growth and recruits
- Adaptations and reef relationships
- Territorial patterns
- Sustainable Management
- Climate change and ocean acidification
- Indigenous Sea Country Connections
The monitoring programs can be tailored to meet student capabilities and competencies. All programs have been designed to garner greater connections to local reef systems and allow for more awareness and understanding of natural habitats and synergies.
Inclusive of field trip costs are classroom visits by a Marine Biologist to work with the teacher and students prior to the field trip.
