A buzzing multicultural city, Cairns has a vast population of international students, travellers and visitors year round. All are attracted to the region’s beautiful natural attractions like the World Heritage Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

Port Douglas is a charming beachfront town about an hour north of Cairns. Take the scenic Captain Cook Highway which twists and turns along the coast. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the spectacular beaches, coastal views, tropical villages, rainforest and mountains. Downtown Macrossan St is the heart of the action at Port Douglas with interesting pubs, bars, cafes and shops lining each side of the street.

Mossman Gorge is worth a visit to learn about the ancient traditions of the Kuku Yalanji people who have inhabited coastal rainforest for eons. The Mossman River is filtered through granite boulder outcrops within the forest and is a great place to cool down. Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest, further north of Port Douglas are both popular destinations, either for day trips or for extended overnight stays.

About one hour west of Cairns the Atherton Tablelands sit almost 1,000m above sea level and is considered the ‘fruit bowl’ of Cairns. Dairy farms and sugar cane plantations are in abundance. The Tablelands are known for growing avocados, mangos, pineapples, peanuts, tea and cacao to name but a few. The towns of Malanda and Millaa Millaa are both worth a visit – and don’t miss the spectacular waterfall and lakes circuit!
